Giving Thanks, the Seismic Shift away from Ethanol

Nov 21, 2012 2:19:25 PM

Good morning!

THANK YOU to Don Baillargeon, host of MoneyTV, for a much longer interview than usual last week. (Watch it here.)

Good thing, too, because so much is going on - from our Popular Science award to the upcoming launch of the Ennesys urban algae test near Paris...

Meanwhile, the oil and gas cleanup business is booming for us and the rest of the water cleanup industry...

Drillers Begin Reusing 'Frack Water'

That was the headline in the Wall Street Journal on Monday.

The article explained how "Companies are racing to find ways to recycle the water used in hydraulic fracturing, chasing an emerging market that could be worth billions of dollars."

And that is very true: we have a full plate of commercial developments in the works that you will hear about in the weeks to come. So incredibly exciting.

EPA Keeps the Renewable Fuels Standard

This is huge!

On Monday, the EPA announced that it would stand firm on biofuels standards, as lad out in the Renewable Fuels Standard.

The RFS is what mandates the rapid transition from food-based biofuels to advanced, sustainable biofuels like algae.

Here's what that means:

  • In 2009, US ethanol production was 10 billion gallons. That was most of the biofuels being produced in this country.
  • By 2022, total US biofuels production will be 36 billion gallons - ALL of it from cellulosic and advanced biofuels!

More than triple the biofuels production, and no more ethanol just ten years from now.

That is a seismic shift from biofuels that distort the food supply to truly sustainable fuels.

Needless to say, this is a huge boost to our industry.

By the way, advanced biofuels support came in 2007, during the Bush administration, with the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA). (Nice to see something that has bipartisan support these days.)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Here's to a wonderful Thanksgiving, if you are in the US! Let's think about our many blessings and the chance to keep doing a better job every day, week and year.

All my best,

Riggs and team
