California's mandatory water cuts...

Written by Riggs Eckelberry | May 26, 2022 2:30:00 AM

Good evening!

You may have seen the story:

With summer months approaching, Gov. Gavin Newsom warned May 23 “the state could be forced to enact mandatory restrictions” if local water conservation efforts continue to be ineffective....

The governor’s office is asking Californians to save water and alleviate the drought by limiting outdoor watering, taking shorter showers, taking showers instead of baths, cleaning outdoor areas with a broom instead of a hose, and washing clothes in a full load.

Meanwhile, water levels in the West's two big reservoirs ─ Lake Powell and Lake Mead are at their lowest-ever. This could affect not only water supplies, but hydroelectric energy:

The level of Lake Powell is currently at an elevation of 3,523 feet, 177 feet below capacity. The intakes that allow water through the dam to generate hydropower are at 3,490 feet.

Hmmm... 33 feet to go. Which means that Lake Powell can't keep sending water to Lake Mead, downstream. Where does this end up? Not great.

There is a solution and I will be reviewing that tomorrow night ─ along with news on our totally new presentation for institutional investors!
