The Horrendous California Drought
Good morning!
The report that the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power has been fining anyone who takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was… satire.
Still, we have a horrendous situation on our hands in California and throughout the West.
Here’s our current state of drought in California.
And… here’s where we were at the same period in 2011!

It could get far worse.
We’ve been looking forward to a new El Niño this year. That’s the Pacific Ocean weather effect that can bring rain to California and save us all.
But now we hear that this year’s El Niño may weaken or never appear.
In other words, this drought could go on. And on.
Proposition One
The situation spurred bipartisan action in Sacramento, where California Governor Jerry Brown just approved a $7.5 billion dollar bond issue to address water issues.
It goes to the voters in November as Proposition One.
My take on this is that we’ll be spending a lot more than $7.5 billion in years to come… if only because the dwindling snow pack will force us to build reservoirs to capture the winter storms that may no longer fall as snow, but as rain.
So this bill launches huge spending on what many call Blue Gold — the water none of us can do without.
What’s in it for OriginOil?
These are the parts of the bill that could benefit us —and our partners:
- $900 million for groundwater sustainability
(cleaning up contaminated aquifers, for example). - $725 million for water recycling.
