Report From AREDAY: Climate Change and Water
Good morning!
Aspen is a beautiful place, and the Aspen Institute is a pearl in that place.
That’s where AREDAY — the American Renewable Energy Summit — is held. As you know, I was invited to participate as a speaker.
The really famous speakers included Ted Turner, General Wesley Clark, The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Edgar Bronfman and T. Boone Pickens.

The Panels
On Friday morning, I participated in the panel, chaired by former Colorado Governor Bill Ritter: “Natural Gas – A Bridge to Where?”
And on Saturday, I moderated “Algae: A Solution to Carbon Emissions.”
Here I am with execs from Altair Fuels, United Airlines and Solazyme. Thank you gentlemen!
So what we had here was a technology provider, a refiner, a customer, and a producer: ideal to cover a great deal of ground on algae for fuels, and biofuels in general.
Interesting fact: Solazyme’s Brazilian project, to produce 100,000 tons of algae oil per year, could save as much carbon every year as planting 10 million trees!
All in all, a very good conference, a great blend of science and imagination. Many thanks to the AREDAY Team for a world-class conference!
Water, Water, Water
Beyond the climate change agenda which was front and center at the Summit, water was a recurring theme.
As I pointed out on the natural gas panel, the West is experiencing a true water emergency. Just check out the “bathtub rings” on the lakes in this article.
In fact, by 2015, the water level in Lake Powell may fall low enough to shut down the production of hydroelectric power!
Which makes our job — to clean massive amounts of water in fracking and other “dirty” operations — a critical one.
