Is Innovation Dying Off?

This is one crazy graph. All my tech career I’ve taken it for granted that innovation was speeding up.

And yet, here we are with science taking a safer and safer (and less innovative) path.

And water NEEDS innovation.

I know a dozen hot technologies in water. They’re doing a great job and they are dedicated.

And yet, 6000 kids continue to die each day from waterborne diseases (to quote just one commonly-quoted stat).

There’s a missing element. And that missing element is: adoption. It’s all very well to have something new, but without the context in which to use it, it’s not going to happen.

Think how likely it would have been for the taxi industry to have had an iPhone app before Uber. They just didn’t see the need.

How do we bring abut adoption? Through what is called the network effect. Which, technology or no technology, is a very real geometric progression (the kind of math that fills a whole football stadium from just one drop of water, in just 45 minutes).
