First up: Paul Reep’s A.I.M. Interview, “Scale Up”

Read Paul Reep’s interview for our top technology guy’s background (informed by many years with the Department of Energy), and for insights into our focus and direction.

As Paul says:

… it’s the repeatability, and then to be able to demonstrate its scale. Those two things are probably the key components right now. And that makes our ability to go to the next jump in scale very feasible, very doable.

We’re very pleased with Paul’s focused contributions since he joined us.

Next up: “Small Scale Algae—An Alternate Vision“

In this month’s Algae Business column (see my previous columns here), I tackle the unique difference between old and new petroleum: while petroleum is a centralized business, you really can and must have both Large and Small Scale algae.

Combining big and small effectively will be the key to algae’s rapid scale-up. Petroleum took many decades; we have much less time.

…a remarkable synergy has emerged [in the world of technology] that we call The Cloud, powered by vast arrays of servers and mainframe computing power that serve highly distributed user networks. One literally can’t function without the other. Is it possible that algae could develop in this direction?

Australia in August!

August is the best time of year to go Way Up North to Townsville in Northern Queensland, the location of this year’s Algae World Australia. Here’s the program agenda.

Townsville is, of course, where MBD Energy operates its research facility at James Cook University, where we’ve been scaling up our own extraction system. There will be an optional trip to this site – come take a look!

We will speak on Day One about: “Scaling Up – from the Lab to the Field”, including this fascinating subject: Balancing conventional process engineering with a living system, algae.
