Algstralia - Because Aussies Get It

Good morning!

Ever heard of Algstralia?

That's the nickname Biofuels Digest gave Australia last week.

Editor Jim Lane asks here:

"What do you do with a country that is basically a desert, cut off from the global biomass trade by a tyranny of distance, with a carbon emissions problem, a wealthy population, a stumbling rural economy, and the occasional political will to do something about climate change?"

There are now numerous thriving algae ventures in Australia.

What's amazing is that US companies are there in force: among them Solazyme, Aurora Algae, and of course OriginOil:

"...the MBD Energy project with OriginOil in Queensland, with R&D funded by Advanced Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre and MBD Energy, including a test of the quantum fracturing and single-step extraction systems developed by OriginOil."

Beyond Australia

It's not just Australia. There's the Mexico 'Manhattan Project' that we announced a few weeks ago. And expect at least one more country to announce a national green priority in the weeks to come.

Now I can't say nothing is going on in the USA, far from it, but it does seem strange that so many American companies are doing so much business in Australia so fast.

Something we could learn from the Aussies Down Under?

Algae Strain Optimization

MBD Energy have now chosen a fast-growing algae strain for their Tarong Energy buildup, and last week we had a team onsite to tune our system to the new environment.

There are many thousands of variables: algae types, water salinity and hardness. We've now matched our system to the new Tarong-specific strain, and the MBD team is working with us to further optimize it. Our goal is to make it even simpler to adapt to new variables.

Well done to the OriginOil team, and thank you to our Australian hosts!

Have a great week.
