OriginOil Senior Director of Product Engineering Bill Charneski discussed the DOE Biomass Program, including biomass specifications, the use of blended feedstock and algae’s role in this blend. Next, he presented the results of an OriginOil Productivity Model which included the cost of produce fuel from various blended biomass feedstock, the cost of algae biomass production and a comparison of various harvesting technologies. He also discussed OriginOil technology and the new OriginOil Algae Appliance Model 4 and Model 20.

A summary of the main findings of OriginOil’s analysis of end to end algae production, using algae-waste blends and pure algae. Also includes a review of U.S. clean fuels drivers, and summary slides on OriginOil and algae as an industrial feedstock.

OriginOil Senior VP of Technology Paul Reep presented on “Biofuels and the Department of Defense”. Reep reported on what OriginOil is doing to meet the aggressive renewable fuels mandates from the U.S. Department of Defense, and specifically from the Department of the Navy. During the open forum, Reep compared the current military priority to the 1950s when the Navy, under the direction of Admiral Hyman Rickover converted the aircraft carrier and submarine fleets from diesel to nuclear power, paving the way for the entire commercial nuclear power industry in the U.S., and how a similar such undertaking has already begun.

OriginOil CEO Riggs Eckelberry presented the latest developments in the U.S. military’s drive to implement alternative fuels, especially in the U.S. Navy. He showed how algae can be a cornerstone feedstock in a blended fuels strategy, and what OriginOil is doing to make this happen. Finally, Eckelberry briefed the audience on the company’s plan to make every algae producer able to create fuels themselves onsite.

OriginOil Senior Vice President of Technology Paul Reep discussed issues of fuel versus food grade algae, with their benefits and limitations.  He then presented an optimal process of converting algae into bio-crude  and drop-in fuels, and algae’s role in the DOE’s Uniform-Format Biomass Feedstock System.  Finally, he introduced the new OriginOil Algae Appliance, the entry level harvester for process development projects that accomplishes low energy, chemical free flocculation, removes of up to 95% of the water and compromises the algae cell walls.

OriginOil Senior Vice President of Technology Paul Reep reported on lessons learned by OriginOil in the field, the prospect of using algae for carbon capture, food dislocation caused by using food crops for fuel, and the progress and importance of multi-feedstock diversification strategies.

Speaking in plenary session, OriginOil CEO Riggs Eckelberry identified serious dislocations caused by single-crop fuel policies and pointed to algae as a way to make crops and waste more sustainable. Eckelberry concluded that “In this zero-sum game, there can be only one winner. Food will always win, since biofuels can be replaced by fossil fuels.” He continued, “instead of waiting for algae to take over from existing biofuels, we should use it now to diversify feedstocks and increase their fuel value. Biofuels from algae can have a relatively high fuel efficiency ratio.”
