One firm pursuing the latter route is OriginOil, which is developing a breakthrough technology to transform algae into “new oil” through a cost-effective, highspeed manufacturing process. Micro-algae currently produce 1,850 gallons per acre of oil, versus 635 gallons/acre for palm oil and 127 gallons/acre for rapeseed.
